The colour of batik cloth is set by the dye used — natural or synthetic. In general, batik colouring spans signature hues such as sogan (brown), indigo/nila (blue), mengkudu (red), turmeric (yellow/gold), and kelengan (a single deep indigo with white). This article looks at the types of batik colour and their dye sources in general terms.
Sogan — the brown of the Javanese courts
Sogan is the warm brown of batik, taken from the bark of the soga tree. Sogan is defined by its colour, not its motif — so many classic patterns like parang, kawung, or sido can appear in sogan tones. Traditionally it is the earthy colour closest to the court batik of Surakarta (Solo) and Yogyakarta.
In general, Solo sogan tends warmer and more brown, while Yogyakarta sogan shows a stronger contrast between deep brown, black, and white/cream. The colour reads as formal and traditional.
Indigo / Nila — the blue
Blue in traditional batik generally comes from indigo plants (nila/tarum, e.g. Indigofera). This dye is tied to coastal batik and often linked to a calm feeling. Alongside sogan, blue is one of the principal colours in the Nusantara batik palette.
Kelengan — light indigo to white
Kelengan refers to batik dipped in only one indigo colour (in traditional terms, the wedelan shade of deep blue). The parts of the motif protected by wax stay white, so the result is deep blue cloth with white patterns. Over time, kelengan is also used for a lighter indigo tone or a particular dip quality. At its root, kelengan is based on simple, single-colour indigo dyeing — not a blend of many colours.
Other natural colours
Beyond soga and indigo, natural batik dyes include:
Mengkudu (root) — gives red, often linked to vitality.
Turmeric / temulawak — yields yellow to golden tones.
Secang (sappanwood) — a source of reddish-orange.
Tarum leaves / Indigofera — a blue source alongside nila.
Modern synthetic dyes
Contemporary batik also uses more practical synthetic dyes, including naphthol (suited to dip dyeing), remasol (suited to brush/colet application), and indigosol (usable for both dip and colet). The dye choice affects the final look, colour fastness, and care.
