How to Calculate Uniform Fabric Requirements (with Example)

How to calculate uniform fabric requirements — the factors that matter, fabric per level, and a simple worked example.

Published · August 13, 2026

Before ordering uniforms in bulk, it is important to understand how to calculate uniform fabric requirements so cost and production estimates are more accurate. This article explains the factors that determine fabric needs and gives a simple calculation example.

Factors that affect fabric needs

The fabric needed per uniform depends on several things:

Size or level of the wearer — fabric needs differ for primary, junior high, and senior high.

Uniform style — sleeve length, shirt or skirt style all affect needs.

Fabric width — 110 cm or 115 cm wide fabric gives slightly different requirements.

Fabric needs by level

In our price list, the requirement for a short-length uniform is primary around 115 cm, junior high around 150 cm, and senior high around 200 cm. Long styles generally need more.

Keep in mind that fabric is estimated per piece, so the total follows the number of wearers. For the most accurate result, confirm sizes, styles, and chosen fabric with the production team before finalising your budget.

Calculation example

As a simple illustration:

If the average need per uniform is 150 cm and there are 100 employees, the estimated fabric need is 100 times 1.5 metres, about 150 metres. Note this example is only an illustration — the actual need is calculated from the chosen size, style, and fabric width.

This estimate helps you start planning, but for accurate results you should confirm with the production team. Uniform details are on our batik uniform and batik confection pages.

Estimating for large groups

For large groups such as schools or offices, fabric is calculated per level or size group and then added together. Remember to allow spare fabric for cutting errors and extra sizes. The article school batik uniforms covers uniform needs by school level.
